The Soul's Retreat

Scared of the Dark

by on Aug.09, 2010, under Children's, Poetry

Two pointed ears
At the end of my bed…
A monster is waiting
He needs to be fed!
I peer through the dark
And quite clearly I see
Those big scary ears
Are twitching at me!

As the moon rises
Behind a dark cloud,
The ears move again
And I scream out loud!
Then the silvery light shows
That what I suppose
Is a big hairy monster –
Are only my toes!

A house so full of memories…

We began our dream here, as newly-weds,
Amongst the paint-pots and dustsheets.
I can see her now, young and spirited,
Dressed in my old torn shirt, hair tied high,
So beautiful.

As time passed us by, this place became home,
Filled with the aromas of fresh baked bread
And percolated coffee.
And she would sing, always a little off-key,
And give a little chuckle if she caught me listening.

All of that was a lifetime ago…

Now here, in our bedroom, our sacred space,
Where she made me promise never to forget her,
I wait, in the knowledge that she will come to me
As she always does, around this time.

She will walk through that doorway,
A vision in white, her long hair flowing.
The sadness almost tangible.
And, although her heartrending cries haunt me,
I refuse to shut them out.

Aching to hold her close, for one last time.
I still reach out, to touch her,
But there is no substance.
An ethereal nothingness.
Each night is both ecstasy and torment!

Time heals, they tell us,
But since I died,
Her sorrow has seemed infinite…

Dear Easter Bunny

by on Aug.09, 2010, under Humorous, Poetry

I’m applying for the vacancy,
Because I’ve heard you’re sick.
A poor bedridden bunny,
The thought cuts me to the quick!

The ad says ‘must be sensitive’
And ‘able and agile.’
‘Must have a sense of humour
And a natty fashion style’.

‘Must be able to look bunny-like’
Well I sure have the teeth!
As for ears, I’m sure they’ll stretch,
And for the ‘underneath’…

Hey, my feet are size eleven
And I have wonderful legs!
And as for my bunny skills,
You should see me juggle eggs!

I’ll need transport from coast to coast
Fast as the speed of sound
So like every clever bunny
I will use ‘the underground’.

Oh please consider me
When choosing your replacement.
(My bunny suit is airing
On a hanger in the basement).

For your answer I’ll be waiting
With wild anticipation.
I can be your bunny double,
That is no eggsaggeration!

This was written for a competion on where we had to write a poetic application to stand in for the Easter Bunny, who was in hospital!

Forward Motion with a Sideways Shift

by on Aug.04, 2010, under Poetry, Spiritual

To My Mam

Seventeen moons have bloomed and faded
Since your progression
Seventeen moons
With the thrum of life echoing
Through this hollow carapace
That was once sanctuary

Myriad thoughts constantly ricochet
Against the hard edges
Of this five-decade crone
Though impotent fury still lines the walls
Of the corridors of memories
Leading in
Leading out
Muting the blethering babble
Of an egocentric society

Your imminence swathed in shrouds of serenity
Holds back the engulfing tides
The honouring of your counsel
Slowly restoring buoyancy
In the boundless ocean of being

Amourphous tendrils
Silken, clinging,
Through souls memories
Chanting, singing,
Sentient thoughts
Transparent, shining,
In visual realms
Auras entwining.
Unconditional, always there…
Timeless love
For all to share.

Meditation – the souls warm, candlelit bubble bath at the end of a stressful day!
Note:  The word ‘Amourphous’ was coined by singer Tim Booth from the band James, and means ‘changing shape, yet held by love’. It’s a merging of the words ‘amour’ from the French, and the word ‘morph’.

The Visit

by on Aug.04, 2010, under Poetry, Spiritual

She came,
As promised…
Trailing silken, gossamer strands
Of every hue,
Each leaving behind
A deliciously perfumed blessing.

From pure white petals of jasmine
To the scented woody aroma of patchouli,
Each amourphous tendril
Softly stroking,
Bringing peace
And tranquillity
To my chaotic mind.

Wings dark as night
Brushed through my dreams.
A multicoloured planetarium of delights,
Gently spinning,
Through my soul.

And love,
So powerfully pure,
To inundate my senses,
Saturating all my fears!
Trickling quietly,
Slowly building strength,
Then thunderously flowing
Through my spirit,
Flooding out the wells of pain,
And ultimately brimming from my eyes.

I had called.
Her hushed whisper echoed in reply…
‘Go to your place of peace.
Shut out the clamour of the world.
Reach into the silence
For my presence,
And wait’

She came, as promised

Paradise Waits

by on Aug.04, 2010, under Poetry, Spiritual

I remember…

Our world collapsed

and we fell.

Where did you alight?

I feel you

hear you

I sense your spirit

I wait

for the hushed whisper
of your silken wings.

for the gentle touch
of your loving arms

to enfold me,

and carry me back

As ice assuages fire inside my heart,
And all my years experience fade to dust,
My dreams and yearnings take on coloured hues,
As iron, when decaying, turns to rust.

Of all the lessons learned while in this life,
The brightest one to shine within my soul
Is love, it’s guided everything I’ve done,
Enriched my world, and healed, and made me whole.

My aging body can no more sustain
This force, this personality that’s me.
I only hope this life’s not been in vain,
That as I die, my spirit may be free.

So as this icy death consumes my shell,
I surrender this frail body without fight,
To leave this world of darkness far behind,
As eternal colour lends my spirit light.

Silenced Citrus!

by on Aug.04, 2010, under Humorous, Poetry

There I was,
In the blazing sun,
Thinking my life had just begun.
When this big brown hand
Pulls me out of my tree,
With no apology
Or by your leave!
My world

I was squashed in a crate
With the lid nailed down!
And we rode in a lorry
Through the middle of town,
Till we came to the docks
And we saw the big ships.
Got loaded in the hold
(Nearly crushing my pips!)
We were all squashed in

Then I ended up
On a market stall
Got squished and squeezed
(Why do people maul
The items they’re buying,
The way they do?)
Well this customer came –
Said ‘I’ll have a few’
Then stood talking about
The weather!

So here I am
In this fancy bowl
On a polished table
Thinking ‘what’s my role’
When this kid walks up
And reaches out,
Picks me up in his hand,
And I want to shout
As he opens his mouth

The Sad Tale of Polly O’Rennick

by on Aug.04, 2010, under Humorous, Poetry

At the foot of the hill she gathered her wits,
She wanted that pixie – she loved him to bits.
She flitted around drinking nectar from flowers,
To pluck up the courage – she’d been trying for hours!

The nectar was sweet and hallucinogenic,
And that little fairy (named Polly O’Rennick)
Was soon on her way to being high as a kite.
She must get her man before the daylight.

She gathered up gossamer, petals and dew,
And stitched them together – what a beautiful hue!
She bathed in a puddle, made face packs of mud,
And created  perfume from a tender rose-bud

She dressed in the finery she had just made.
She had to look sexy, she aimed to get laid!
The thought of his body now made her toes curl,
And that potent brew had her head in a whirl

All ready for action, she had two more sips.
It gave her ‘Dutch Courage’ and she licked her lips,
Excited with thoughts of the fun to be had
With that sexy, most wonderful, Faerie lad.

But alas, those last sips took her over the limit.
Unaware of the strength and the potency in it,
She tottered and staggered, then fell, in a heap,
And without more ado – she was fast asleep!
